motivation

the process of ideas.

Kim Baer

Kim Baer was an interesting person to hear speak. The speech she gave made me remember that it doesn’t matter where I come from but what matters is where I am going. She mentions some of the experiences she went through in order to pursue what she loves, graphic design. She also mentioned her stay in New York and how at first it was difficult to find a job. Although, she went through several experiences and places at the end she was able to make it far. Now, she is doing work for the National art History Museum and changing how people think about the museum now. Kim, as a graphic designer, has giving me a heads up on what’s ahead of me in graphic design. Enjoyed!

child play

I strongly believe that because of education we grow out of our child instincts. Like mentioned before in glass "we are like robots, being shipped into the work force" what Tim Brown mentions in this video is how children are capable of being more creative than adults. We tend to be scared of being wrong and scared to show our own creative selves. What i love about this video is how our own environment should be playful and let us express our childish creative senses. BRILLIANT

20 sketches

On Monday I was not able to make it to class. But, here are some photos of my 20 sketches if any one likes to see them. At first I was not sure if we had to make 20 different games or 20 different sketches for the same game. As a result I decided to really make 20 sketches for one specific game. At first I didn’t have any ideas but then I did a list of games I had prior knowledge. Some games included, monopoly, horse and the tail, bingo ec.. Then, I picked an audience which was CHILDREN. Of course, I know someone that works in LAUSD and I asked what where some of the games they liked to play. He told me “well kids are always hyper and running around and they never sit in one place”. With this information I then I decided to make all the players interact in the game every time it was someone’s turn, as you may be able to read in the photo.
Lastly, in my sketch I also named my game “Loop the Points”; there’s a lot to do in designing a game and it was not a simple task making it but good experience.

Game ideas

The next class, after game day, we were able to see what others created as a reaction to the games. What I was able to see was the different kinds of ideas others had. I remember seeing pop-out collages and most importantly the different result everyone had. What I liked about this assignment is that it helped to see how other thought and how to discover our thinking process.

Game time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEPmnMIi3c8

Today class was fun! The class got the chance to play GAMES with others in class. Some games were dull and others fun. My group played “Loteria”, a traditional Mexican game. This game is similar to bingo, but on the other hand the cards are made up of characters. The game started to get hard when my group played two cards and the speed of the cards started to become faster each time. Also, for homework we had to draw an idea of our emotional experience of the game we played. Tomorrow should be interesting, watching the game experience of others in paper.

Different view in things

On Wednesday we watched two movies, the power of ten and why men creates. The first movie (the powers of ten) started a bit slow and didn’t capture my attention as much. On the other hand the movie ‘why men creates’ was more interesting. What captured my attention was the different point of views the camera had. For example, the introduction of the stories had a person writing the title in the paper. Not only that but the short story “the process” was a bit funny. These two stories have an interesting view in looking at the things around us.

Prepare for the unexpected...

During class (Monday) we created several stories with objects that we had. Several stories were dull and others were more creative. The Purpose of this exercise, I believe, was to identify what we were capable of doing in a short period and how much creativity we could accomplish. Also, When every one mentioned their stories some were really long and made no sense. This exercise really gave me an idea of how prepare I have to be when I have my own job.

Milton Glaser: To inform and Delight:

On my way to this event all I though was “I am going to be late!”, the traffic was horrible and all I could do is sit in traffic and wait for the cars to move. Once I was there I had to find parking and once again I thought “I am going to be late!”. Then I was there and all I found where empty chairs and a white screen with no movie and empty chairs. My first reaction was “O.M.G… I am late….yet again, I wasn’t” so I thought they ended up early. So then after seeing that there was no movie, I decided to look around the small gallery of the movie “Where the while things are” and found it to be worth it at least. Later, The next class meeting I found out that they couldn’t find the DVD which explained a lot.

Thinking Heads

Thinking heads
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mddD1yGREKQ

Sir Ken Robinson is a great speaker and a good comedian, I might add. His words serve as a booster for the self steam and what we are good at. What caught my attention was when he mentioned “Find what we are good at” Yet again I wonder how this is possible when several people (middle class) might not have the RESOURCES to take this step.

As Aristotle mentions,
It needs the external goods as well; for it is impossible, or not easy, to do noble acts without the proper equipment.” (Nicomachean Ethics, Bk 1, Ch. 8, p. 96)

How can some people find what they are good at when at times it’s not being backed up with resources?

As I recall, Robinson also illustrated a story and mentioned “a Gardener can’t make a beautiful plant but can make the plan grow only when the CONDITIONS are made good for the plant to grow”

Sometimes the Gardener itself is our own parents. In my case the people to take into consideration are our parents themselves. Our parents are the first teachers we have and our early providers. But what will happen when our providers don’t have enough resources to provide us with? In my case I had the choice of working to help the family or work two jobs in order to follow my dream (something that my parents wanted but couldn’t afford).
Yet again, it all starts from the main source our parents; how can they provide for their children when in some cases they can’t afford school for them (the conditions)? Let alone how can we find what we are good at when it’s not as easy as saying it?

My solution: turning things around making what I love a goal to reach for.

ps.. Jimmy moss you have a "member of the beatles" in you class :)

Changing meaning/Designing meaning

Designing meaning for the viewer can be a hard task at times. Having and idea of the “prior knowledge” a certain audience has can be tough sometimes (social context). Here in the United States we might find some topics amusing while in other countries it could be insulting.
I believe that the audience is the key element in being able to design meaning. For example, in class the photo with the dry branches and the (quote) “grandma’s soft touch” really made some of us giggle, why? Because of the perception we have with grandmothers. Designing meaning can be seen in advertisement; yet again I never thought of creating my own meaning of things and was not that aware of the impact it had in advertisement. The exercise in class, made me see that what we overlook can be important for the total end project. Brilliant exercise
